The GOP Wants to Tax the Poor More

Senator Rick Scott hates Social Security and Medicare too.

Rick Scott comes from Florida, and he thinks you don’t pay enough federal income tax. Scott is a GOP senator from Florida, and he wants to make sure that you pay a minimum of $100 to the Fed.

You might wonder what would make Scott go to such extremes. His plan to rescue America seeks to do away with Social Security and Medicare. This plan is the precise opposite of what the Fed usually does.

It’s not as if the government plays fast and loose with tax breaks. The Earned Income Tax Credit makes sure that those who earn below a certain amount pay no taxes. The Fed discontinued a tax credit for families with children.

Did the Internal Revenue Service have a lower take this year?

We dislike the poor.

It was quite the opposite; the IRS reported a record-breaking haul from taxes.

The GOP is raising taxes on poor people for the same reason the International Monetary Fund makes poor countries enact extreme austerity measures. It’s the kind of schadenfreude that goes with the bad luck of an offer.
