America has been hostile to Russia since the 1990s as part of a new Cold War, despite cooperation elsewhere.

America’s stated interests are to:
1. Isolate Russia. Surround it with military discouragement to expansion.

2. Include Ukraine in NATO.

3. Bring Ukraine into Europe’s economic structures.

4. Preserve financial opportunities in Ukraine.

The Russian Federation's interests are:
1. Access to a warm water port on the Black Sea for the Russian navy.

2. The Russian defense industry depends on Eastern Ukraine for armaments and military equipment.

3. Prevent Ukraine from joining NATO or the EU.

4. To live in a multi-polar world with more than one world order.
