Magic Mike is one of the few guaranteed paydays left in Hollywood.

This story is about loss. Thandie Newton lost her family before the shoot started. The man left for some milk, or whatever men who leave say is the reason, and he stayed gone.

That tore her to private smithereens, I’m guessing.

She lost a mountain of that scrilla.

Thandiwe Newton’s payday would have been larger than what some earn in a year. It’s a story about race and culture as seen from the outside. If you are Black, you are probably on the outside if the place is a major motion picture.

More than anything, this story is all about fame.

When you have to take a loss, your fame has to take a backseat to self-preservation — the fame boomerangs back into your awareness with the same bright light, except it’s now a laser that burns into your ego.

It’s no wonder that Thandie Newton is headed to a stint at rehab because of this imbroglio. She is far too expert at precise proximity to pale power to merit such a defenestration.

You would have to be either on something or mixed up about something to get the pink slip the way she did. That is a story…
